MELBOURNE, NNC – Sebastian Vettel has won the opening race of the 2018 Formula One (F1) season at Albert Park Circuit, Australia, on Sunday (03/25). Vettel has now managed to win the Australian GP series twice in a row. In the previous season, he won the Australian GP after starting at pole position.
Despite the win, the Ferrari team rider admitted that he was a bit lucky to have finished in front of champion-favorite Lewis Hamilton.
Vettel finished first with a record time of 1 hour 29 minutes 33.283 seconds. Hamilton was 5,036 seconds behind.
His lucky win seems to be related to the incident involving two of Haas riders, Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean.
At the 24th lap, Magnussen had trouble on his ride's tire after entering pitstop. The virtual safety car was then lit two laps later. However, the real safety car went into the circuit when Grosjean's car spun on the track.
After the safety car left the track on lap 35, Vettel was already in front of Hamilton. The German rider was able to maintain his leading position in the remaining 23 laps.
Therefore, it is appropriate if Vettel felt assisted in his victory this time.
"We got a little lucky with the safety car, but yeah, i really enjoy it," Vettel said, as quoted by Reuters. The next series will be held in Bahrain on April 8, 2018.
