SINGAPORE, NNC - Indonesia President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo has been trusted to become coordinator of the ASEAN-Russia dialogue. In the meeting, he delivered a statement on behalf of ASEAN regarding the development of ASEAN-Russia cooperation at the ASEAN-Russia meeting in Singapore on Wednesday (11/14).
"Our meeting today marks an increase in ASEAN-Russia relations as a strategic partner," the President said in his statement received by the media crew from the Deputy for Protocol, Press and Media of the Presidential Secretariat Bey Machmudin.
President Jokowi said that through the partnership, in the future ASEAN and Russia are deemed necessary to further enhance the cooperation.
Among them is by completing all work programs that have been set out in the 2016-2020 ASEAN-Russia Action Plan, strengthening ASEAN-Russia communication, coordination and consultation at various levels, and becoming a solution to various world problems.
While in the economic field, the President revealed that trade in ASEAN and Russia in 2017 had increased to almost 40 percent. The trade volume reached USD 16.7 billion while the investment value in ASEAN reached USD 40 million.
"However, we need to continually strive to increase the value of trade and investment by utilizing various potential economic cooperation that exists and encourage the interaction of entrepreneurs," he added.
As for other fields, ASEAN also encourages cooperation in disaster management, education, culture, youth, tourism, and health. Especially in the field of disaster management, President Jokowi requested that the ASEAN and Russian agreements be resolved immediately.
"In that regard, we need to encourage the finalization of the ASEAN-Russia Agreement in handling disasters, immediately," said the President.
Associated with solving problems in the field of security in stability in a number of regions. in addition, the President touched on the latest developments in the peace process on the Korean Peninsula. However, on the other hand, the problems related to Palestine and Syria are still volatile. Therefore, active cooperation is needed from ASEAN and also partner countries to be able to contribute to solving these problems.
"For that I believe that the ASEAN-Russia partnership can contribute to solving problems in the region and globally," he said.
Ending his statement, as President of the Republic of Indonesia, President Joko Widodo expressed his gratitude for the support and assistance provided by Russia and other ASEAN countries.
As it is known, after the recent earthquake and tsunami disaster in Central Sulawesi, a number of friendly countries provided assistance to Indonesia.
"Your solidarity helps our people rise up with new hopes," President Joko Widodo said, closing the bilateral meeting.
