Speedboat Carrying Tourists Catches Fire at Seribu Islands

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM – A speedboat named Zevolution 9 Princessa Debble chartered for tourists has caught fire in the waters of Ayer Island, Seribu Islands on Thursday (4/27) morning at around 08:35.

The vessel is known to have transported tourists going to Resort Island of North Seribu Islands. The speedboat departed from the 17th dock of Marina Ancol. While sailing to Resort Island, the speedboat suddenly caught fire.

As a result of the fire, one passenger suffered serious burns. There were no casualties, and other passengers were declared safe.

The wounded victim, JAP Onny Najoan, is now being treated at Atmajaya Pluit Penjaringan Hospital. The 19 passengers and crew were taken to the Marine Police Office of Jakarta Metro Police in Pondok Dayung, Tanjung Priok.

Seribu Islands Fire and Rescue Services, with the help of Marine Police immediately came to rescue the stricken speedboat.

Police Commissioner Iwan Rachmansyah, Director of Marine Police at Jakarta Metro Police, said all passengers and crew of the ship, namely Antoni (skipper), Bragi (crew) and Gunawan (crew), have been evacuated by marine police members assisted by fishermen. The condition of the ship was already burnt. "Our members will investigate the crime scene," he said.

Meanwhile, Head of Sector 8 of the Seribu Islands Fire Rescue, Eko Mahendro, said the speedboat belonged to a man named David.

"We are very lucky because marine police were at the area for observation, and gotten the distress call from the speedboat. We will now look for the cause of the speedboat’s fire,” Eko said.
