Earthquake of 5.1-Magnitude Rocks Garut (special)

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Rahmat Triyono reported, that on Thursday (4/11/2019), at 00.37.49 WIB, the region of the South Indian Ocean of Java was rocked by tectonic earthquakes.

The BMKG analysis shows that this earthquake has the power M = 5.1 which is then updated to M = 5.0. The earthquake epicenter is located at the coordinates of 8,25 LS and 107,29 BT, or precisely located in the sea at a distance of 132 km southwest of the City of Garut, Garut Regency, West Java Province at a depth of 47 km.

"This earthquake in southern Java, taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter. It appears that this shallow-depth earthquake is caused by the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian Plate which infiltrated beneath the Eurasian Plate," said Rahmat, as written in his statement Thursday / 2019).

The impact of earthquake based on community reports was felt in Cibaduyut, Pangalengan, Garut, Cianjur, Ciamis, Sukabumi, and Bandung II-III MMI. Until now there have been no reports of the damage caused by the earthquake.

"The results of the source mechanism analysis show that this earthquake was generated by rock deformation with the mechanism of the movement of the type of up fault. The modeling results show that the earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami," said Rahmat.

Until 01.04 WIB, BMKG monitoring results have not shown any aftershock activity. The community is urged to remain calm and not be affected by issues that cannot be justified.
