Polri Investigate Fire on Board Pertamina’s Tanker That Killed Five Workers

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Indonesia National Police (Polri) has participated in the investigation of fire on board state-owned energy company Pertamina’s tanker vessel named Gamkonora at the ASL Shipyard area. Police suspect the fire is attributed to electrical short circuit.

"There is a possibility of electric short circuit, as some of the work on the vessel requires the use of electricity. If it is proved that the electrical short circuit was deliberate, we will process the case,” said Police Inspector General Setyo Wasisto, Head of Public Relations Division at Polri in Jakarta on Friday (9/8/2017).

Earier, fire erupted on board Pertamina's Gamkonora tanker at PT ASL Shipyard area. The fire occurred at 15:20 on Thursday (9/7/2017). Five people were killed in the incident.

Setyo continued that investigators have not found where the fire was originated. The investigators immediately examined witnesses, including the captain of the ship. In the meantime, the crime scene has been secured and sterilized.

The fire allegedly originated from the ship's pumping chamber that was being repaired at the shipyard.

"The tanker docked on Wednesday (September 5, 2017), work on the vessel started on the 7th,” he said.

At the time of the incident, there were six employees in the pump room. Five people were killed, while one worker was seriously injured.
