JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - The national airline Garuda Indonesia (IDX:GIAA) continues to strengthen its commitment to developing Medan's Kualanamu International Airport as a domestic flight hub for the West and Southeast Asia regions.

Garuda Indonesia President Director Ari Askhara said, Kualanamu International Airport as the fourth largest commercial airport in Indonesia with economic potential and strategic geographical position, has the main capital as the second international and domestic hub in Indonesia in addition to Soekarno Hatta International Airport. We will also continue to develop Kualanamu as a flight hub for tourism that is connected with international city cities in the region.

"The strategic location of the Medan region, which is the gateway to the western part of Indonesia, makes Medan's potential as a base for international aviation hubs increasingly promising. With a geographical position adjacent to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, the economic center in Southeast Asia, international passenger growth is predicted to increase, "he said in Jakarta on Friday (03/22/2019).

"Of course, it needs the support of all parties so that Kualanamu becomes the entrance for foreign tourists to western Indonesia or other parts of Indonesia. Kualanamu must be an important hub to balance Singapore and Kuala Lumpur airports," Ari concluded.

With the record of passenger movement reaching 10 million passengers in 2018, where 10 percent of them are international passengers, the potential of the passenger transportation market at Kualanamu Airport is still wide open.

The wide-open market potential is also supported by the airport infrastructure and capacity development plan which is continuously being increased by AP II, where in the next 2027 Kualanamu International Airport is projected to accommodate more than 47 million passengers.

Furthermore, Director of Angkasa Pura II Muhammad Awaluddin revealed that his side welcomed Garuda Indonesia's commitment as a National Flag Carrier in strengthening Medan Kualanamu International Airport as a supporting flight hub for Garuda Indonesia in the West Indonesia region.

"We are also optimizing the commitment to strengthen the Kualanamu International Airport flight network through the exploration of commercial synergies with a number of international strategic partners so that later the Kualanamu International Banda can have international competitiveness through various advantages of infrastructure and flight capacity," Awaluddin said.

Meanwhile, flight observer Alvin Lie said "The National Air Transportation Industry Sector should have a bargaining point in the development and optimization of national aviation networks, especially in optimizing passenger traffic and tourism potential through the utilization of national aviation networks by local airlines.

"For this reason, it is necessary to re-examine the governance efforts of the development of international aviation hubs in order to continue to prioritize the development of the national aviation hub network which can certainly support the traffic of international tourist movements through optimizing the capacity of international airports in Indonesia and national airline flight networks.

Public policy observer Agus Pambagio revealed that "Indonesia should be the host of a strategy to increase national and international tourist visits. Especially through the development of optimization of hubs & spoke of national airports which of course also have their own competitiveness over geographical strategic position and the advantages of national aviation connectivity ".

"Commitment to the development of the tourism sector should also be harmonized with ongoing protection efforts for its supporting industrial sectors, one of which is the national aviation industry".
