Balikpapan-Samarinda Toll Road Expected to be Operable by October 2018

BALIKPAPAN, NNC - East Kalimantan Governor Awang Faroek Ishak targets Section I of the 22km-long Balikpapan-Samarinda (Balsam) toll road segment operated by PT Wijaya Karya (IDX:WIKA) or Wika and four other contractors to be operable for traffic starting in October 2018.

"Previously inaugurated by President Jokowi, we continue to coordinate with the President to accelerate the completion of strategic development projects such as this toll road project," said the Governor in Balikpapan on Sunday (3/25/2018).

Governor Awang Faroek visited the road to release Wika 10K run participants on Sunday from the starting point at Km 13 Karang Joang. A total of hundreds of runners from various cities in Indonesia took part in the activities that were held five kilometers to go back and forth on the road.

The Section I segment extends from Km 13 Karang Joang to Km 38 Samboja. The length is 20.93 km. The work is divided into five segments by five different contractors. Wika is working on Segment 1 along 4.4 km, along with PT Bangun Karya Contractor, PT Adhi Karya (IDX:ADHI), PT Hutama Karya and PT Waskita Karya (IDX:WSKT). All are state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

Wika has 99 percent completed the Segment I, a project worth IDR322.3 billion with funding from the East Kalimantan Regional Budget.

"I hope the soft opening today for Segment I will motivate other contractors to make similar progress," said the Governor.

The governor added for Section I there is no more land acquisition problem, including with coal mines in Samboja which become the territory of Kutai Kartanegara.

In Segment I done by Wika, the road with concrete and asphalt surface is already completed with traffic signs, directions, including distance markers. Every 200 meters there is a sign for distance.

Road safety fences are almost entirely installed. On top of the 2-lane road each 10 meters wide, in some places there is a bridge that connects the community road, which before there is a highway was located on the ground.

Entirely from Balikpapan to Samarinda, the Balsam Toll Road stretches along 99.02 km. started in 2011 with groundbreaking in Manggar, Balikpapan the development is divided into 5 Sections, namely Section I Km 13-Samboja. Section II from Samboja-Kutai Kartanegara to Palaran I-Samarinda. Section III, from Samboja to Palaran II; Section IV, Palaran to Mahkota Bridge II Samarinda and Section V from Manggar-Balikpapan to Km 13.

The five sections are funded by the East Kalimantan Province Regional Budget and the Toll Road Enterprises (BUJT) through PT Jasa Marga of Balikpapan-Samarinda as well as the State Budget funds through loans from China, as quoted from Antara.
