BPS on Indonesia Losing in Product Competitiveness Compared to Neighboring Countries

Central Office of BPS.

JAKARTA, NNC - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) said President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's disappointment about declining export figures compared to neighboring countries, can be solved by conducting a new or diversified market search.

According to Suhariyanto, basically Indonesia's exports grew 16.8 percent in the past year. However, President Jokowi was still disappointed because the realization is still far behind compared to other countries.

"So he asked all ministers to improve the performance of our exports," he said at BPS Building, Jakarta, Thursday (2/1/2018).

According to him, the national export structure needs revamping. The reason, 35 percent of Indonesia's exports are aimed to the United States, China, and Japan. This is certainly harmful if the countries are experiencing great turmoil.

Therefore, the diversification of the market becomes a solution for national exports to remain as desired by President Jokowi. "So diversification of the market becomes a necessity in the future so that our dependence on certain countries is not too big. Because it is harmful," he added.

He added that Indonesia exported products still have weaknesses because the national exports are still dominated by raw commodities. He considered there is a need for improvement in terms of products such as processed products (downstream) in order to have a large added value.

"Well, if the added value can be done, it would create labor. The type of products to be exported will also be more varied. But this must be accompanied by ease of permit and regulation so that our export price is highly competitive", he said.
