Gov’t Has Built 39 New Dams and 840 Water Reservoirs

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Ministry of Public Works and Housing has recorded the achievement of infrastructure acceleration in the era of President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla.

One of them is the connectivity between the construction of water supply facilities.

Danis Sumadilaga, Head of Research and Development Agency of Public Works Ministry, said for the three years of 2015-2017, a total of 39 new dams and 840 embungs (water reservoirs) were built.

It was initially targeted pursuing 65 dams and 1,893 embungs to be completed by 2019.

"We build dams and embungs in all areas of Indonesia, Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara and Java. Until 2017, there are 39 dams built, with 9 dams completed by the end of the year. By the end of 2019 there will be 29 dams completed and there will be 36 in construction," he said, Tuesday (10/17/2017), in Jakarta.

Danis explained that the construction of dams and embungs is intended for water conservation, raw water and potential energy, which is beneficial to serve the irrigation of 98,084 hectares of reservoir with a water storage capacity of 1,031 million cubic meters.

"In the framework of food security, 1 million hectares of new irrigations, raw water and other destructive power controls are made throughout Indonesia. The existing dams are in Rajui Aceh, as well as West Java," he added.
