LONDON, NETRALNEWS.COM – The opening of the English Premier League 2017-2018 season is filled with drama at Stamford Bridge on Saturday (8/12/2017) afternoon local time. Hosts and defending champions Chelsea has been given a surprise defeat of 2-3 (0-3) by visitors Burnley.
Antonio Conte's team’s defeat was attributed to two red cards received by captain Gary Cahill at the 14th minutes and Cesc Fabregas in the 80th minute. This is Chelsea's first defeat of Burnley in the last 40 years.
Utilizing the red card given to Cahill, Burnley was able to shock the London public by scoring three goals from Sam Vokes in the 24th minute, Stephen Ward's hard shot in the 39th minute, and Vokes' header in the 43rd minute.
In the second half, Chelsea was able to reduce the deficit. Chelsea's pressure began to be felt with the entry of Alvaro Morata. In the 69th minute, Willian sent a cross to forward Morata, which he met with a diving header to make the score 1-3.
Unfortunately, Chelsea’s rise was abruptly disrupted when Fabregas received a second yellow card. However, with 9 players, Chelsea still dominated the game. And, two minutes before the end of normal time, David Luiz's sweep took advantage of Morata's flick to goalkeeper Tom Heaton. Score 2-3.
Stamford Bridge public increasingly rumble to pump the spirit of Morata and his teammates. However, just a minute later, Chelsea goal was almost conceded again when Robbie Brady's free kick hit the right post. In the remaining time, Chelsea failed to make a miracle to equalize.
