MANCHESTER, NETRALNEWS.COM - Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has begun beating the drums of war to the club that the Red Devils will face in the Europa League final, Ajax Amsterdam.
According to Mourinho, Ajax Amsterdam are not worthy to be allowed to appear in the second caste competition on the Continent following the failure of Peter Bosz’s in the Champions League before that.
Since the 2009-2010 season, UEFA has created a new rule in the Europa League competition format, which includes clubs that are ranked third in the Champions League group stage into the Europa League knock-out phase.
Not only that, the clubs who were eliminated from the Champions League play-off qualifiers were put directly into the Europa League group stage. Through this scheme Ajax appear in the Europa League final this season after defeated by Russian club, FC Rostov with aggregate 2-5 in the play-offs, 16 and 24 August 2016.
That format is what Mourinho criticized. In the mind of the Special One, clubs eliminated from the Champions League should not be allowed to play in the Europa League in the same season. Because, it just devalues the prestige of the tournament itself.
"They [Ajax] are Champions League clubs. They came from the Champions League. I always disagree [with a format like that], "said Mourinho.
"I think one team should not get a chance to play in two European competitions in the same season. Those who are marginalized, yes have been excluded. So, they should not get the option to play in the Europa League. "
"The Europa League is a competition for teams that actually won tickets through the Europa League. For example, like us [MU]. Last season, we were fifth. So, we get tickets to the Europa League, "added Mourinho.
