JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - The 2018 Asian Games Organizing Committee (INASGOC) is still awaiting the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA)'s decision on the number of sports approved at Asia's highest sporting event.
"We are still awaiting the OCA's decision, because they have to discuss the number of sports with the member countries, but the number of sports must be decreased," said INASGOC President Erick Thohir in Jakarta, Thursday (04/20/2017).
Vice President Jusuf Kalla as Chairman of the Asian Games Steering Committee, continued Erick, has met with OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah on Tuesday (04/18) night related to the hosting of the 18th Asian Games.
At the meeting, OCA insisted 28 sports in the 2016 Rio Olympics cannot be reduced. "But, they will learn the sports that are in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics," said Erick.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympic sports branches that the OCA is still contemplating in the 2018 Asian Games are surfing and skateboard/ rollerblade.
Although still awaiting an official letter from the OCA on the number of Asian Games sports, Vice President Jusuf Kalla has asked for a reduction in the number of matches in the 2018 Asian Games to 431 matches.
"Referring to the Tokyo Olympics 2020, the concept of organizing sport championship in the world is no longer counting the number of sports but the number of matches," said Erick who also serves as Chairman of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI). (*)
