JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has apologized to Jordan Henderson because he had been playing the Liverpool captain as a defensive midfielder for so long that Henderson could not demonstrate his ability to attack for the past 18 months.

The Liverpool captain had received a lot of criticism during his career at Liverpool, but he finally played a more attacking role in the 2-0 victory in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Porto on Wednesday (10/4/2019) early morning Indonesian western time.

The England national midfielder was able to create a number of chances and opened the opportunity for Roberto Firmino's goal.

"(Jordan) Hendo is a brilliant player. I am very happy he can show his abilities again. He likes that position and I am guilty of playing him for a year and a half as a defensive midfielder, but we needed him there," Klopp said after the match, as quoted by the BBC Sports, Wednesday (04/10/2019).

Fabinho played as a Liverpool defensive midfielder against Porto and allowed Henderson to play more forward.

Henderson has played 316 times for Liverpool since joining Sunderland in 2011 and he was appointed to replace club legend Steven Gerrard as captain in 2015.

He was widely criticized for appearing inconsistent and lacking in creativity, Henderson also called playing too safely by giving sideways operands.

Liverpool's 2-0 victory at Anfield made the Reds more likely to qualify and be able to control their own destiny ahead of the second leg on Thursday 17 March next week.
