SAINT PETERSBURG, NNC – France coach Didier Deschamps said the failure in the final of Euro 2016 still haunts his mind until now when his team managed to advance to the final round of the 2018 World Cup.
In order to eliminate that thought, Didier Deschamps said there is no word of failure again for the French national team that has been in the final party of the 2018 World Cup.
French national team stepped into the final round after defeating the Belgian national team with a score of 1-0 in a match that took place at the Saint Petersburg Arena on Tuesday (7/10/2018). Samuel Umtiti's header in the 51st minute sent France to the final and Deschamps's side will face England or Croatia in Moscow on Sunday (7/15).
They want to re-hoist the World Cup trophy for the second time after their win at home in 1998.
"It is something exceptional -- I am very happy for my players. They are young, but there is character, and mentality," said Deschamps, who was captain of the French in 1998.
"Two years ago, I remember what happened two years ago," the coach said referring to his team's 1-0 defeat by Portugal in Paris during the Euro finals.
"We will go into this final to win it, as we have still not gotten over the [Euro] final," he added.
Brazilian Mario Zagallo won the 1958 and 1962 World Cups as a player and later as coach of the 1970 world championship, while Franz Beckenbauer captained West Germany in 1974 and took them to the world title in 1990 as their coach.
"I feel very proud of my team. We have been 49 days together," Deschamps said.
"There are many things, many things that are difficult. Everyone can take credit," he added, reported FIFA.
