ENGLAND, NNC - Formula 1 (F1) defending team champion, Mercedes finally showed off their latest racing car codenamed W09, in front of the media.
W09 will be the new ride for Mercedes racers, Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas in the 2018 F1 race.
The official launch event for W09 was held at Silverstone Circuit, England, on Thursday (2/22/2018) local time. Hamilton and Bottas accompanied by team boss Toto Wolff appeared to be present at the launch event.
Mercedes has ambitions to match Ferrari's record this year, winning five world riders and constructors' titles in a row. Ferrari did that with Michael Schumacher in 2000-2004.
The dominance of Mercedes started since F1 entered the era of V6 engine in 2014. From that time until 2017, the German manufacturer always came out as world champion and constructor respectively through Hamilton (2014, 2015, 2017) and Nico Rosberg (2016).
Hamilton and Bottas had tested W09 for a few laps at Silverstone before the launch event. They will again test the car in a pre-season test in Barcelona on February 26-March 1.
"This is the most exciting part of this year to date, looking at the car as a whole," said Hamilton as quoted from Sky Sports.
"I have seen car the development over the last eight months and can see all the parts together, this is a work of art," he said.
Last year with the W08, Mercedes won 12 out of 20 races. The other five series belonged to Ferrari, while three were won by Red Bull.
"I hope we have covered up the many shortcomings. There are different aerodynamic characteristics this year, before we had certain circuits where we were not very tough, so hopefully we have found the right compromise for all circuits," Hamilton said.
"But, everything is new, all suspensions and everything has been reworked, this is really new," he concluded.
