How to Wash Pesticides from Fruits and Vegetables

Do not wash fruits and vegables with chemical soap (pedulisehat)

JAKARTA, NNC - Vegetable and fruit consumption should not be skipped to meet the nutritional balance. However, concerns are now on the increase that vegetables and fruits that have been sprayed by significant amounts of pesticides to protect the plants from rampant pests and extreme weather.

With the changing of times, many vegetable and fruit growers are now turning to planting organic herbs. Unfortunately, organic fruits and vegetables are still difficult to find, and often have high prices.

Lecturer vocational occupational medicine therapy lecturer at Universitas Indonesia (UI), dr Tri Gunadi A Md OT S Psi, has provided tips for you to wash vegetables and fruits that may contain high pesticide. However, do not use soaps containing chemicals when washing fruits and vegetables.

"Vegetables and fruits contain not only pesticides, but can also contain toxic heavy metals that can enter the body and damage health. Wash vegetables and fruits using baking soda, just two tablespoons and let stand for five minutes, then rinse with running water," said dr. Tri.

According to the Ministry of Health (MoH), various kinds of foods containing heavy metals, harmful chemicals, bacteria, viruses and fungi and allergen substances are capable of affecting health, especially those with symptoms of autism.

So it is important for parents to provide balanced diet. Dr. Tri added that milk intake is not primary, but merely to complement nutrition intake.

Eating a balanced diet includes carbohydrate intake as much as 50 percent, fruits and vegetables 30 percent, fifteen percent protein and fat as much as five percent. (*)
