Indonesia Tourism Minister Promotes Indonesian Geoparks at UNESCO HQ (kemenpar)

PARIS, NNC - Indonesia Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya, representing the Government of Indonesia, is promoting the potential of Indonesian geoparks at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.

In his working visit to Europe, Menpar Arief Yahya did not only promote the superiority of the country's tourist destinations in the arena of the world's largest tourism exchange, ITB Berlin, Germany. Through the Ministry of Tourism, the Indonesian Government also conveyed the potential and promoted Geopark in the country to UNESCO officials at its headquarters in Paris, France.

Last year, Indonesia has successfully recorded two geoparks in the list of UNESCO Global Geopark (UGG), namely Rinjani Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara and Ciletuh Sukabumi in West Java. The target is that this year Indonesia will register two other geoparks, the Belitung Geopark and the Lake Toba Caldera Geopark.

The Minister of Tourism who attended specifically to the UNESCO headquarters in Paris said, before Indonesia also had a Global Geopark, including Mount Batur in Bali and Gunung Sewu which stretched from South Yogyakarta, Central Java, to East Java.

"In this destination development framework, we always use the concepts of 3A, Attractions, Access, and Amenities. And if you want to become a global player, you have to use global standards, "he said on Friday (03/08/2019).

For access factors, the global standard is realized in the form of building an International Airport in many places. And that has been done by President Jokowi as a form of commitment to Indonesian tourism. While in terms of amenities, it is characterized by more and more developed 5-star international hotels in various destinations. "Third is an attraction that must also be world class," said Arief Yahya.

The world class in question, said Arief Yahya, is an attraction that has gained world recognition, or is officially recognized with certificates issued by trusted world institutions, such as UNESCO.

"In many places in the world, the UGG always has a significant impact on tourists. The branding is immediately global because it is recognized by UNESCO, the world institution, "he said.

Lake Toba and Belitung can be worldwide faster, if the attraction is also at the world level. It's easier to promote and package it as a story, when it was approved by UNESCO.
