King Salman names Ibrahim al-Assaf as new Foreign Minister

Saudi King Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud

JAKARTA, NNC - Saudi King Salman has named former finance minister Ibrahim al-Assaf as the new foreign minister following a new cabinet reshuffle.

The reshuffle also included changes to key national security positions, according to a state media report on Thursday.

It came after the Saudi government faced pressure from the international community over the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, in October.

As the new foreign minister, Assaf replaces Adel al-Jubeir.

The king also named Abdullah bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz to replace Prince Miteb bin Abdullah as Head of the National Guard.

King Salman also instructed that the Saudi Arabian Political and Security Council be overhauled.

General Kalid bin Qirar al-Harbi was named head of public security while Musaed al-Aiban is named national security adviser, according to Antara.
