See-Through Dress Lands Actress in Hot Waters in Egypt

Egyptian actress Rania Youssef (tech2)

MESIR, NNC -- An Egyptian actress is set to face trial next month on charges of showing pornography in the public. This happened after the actress attended the closing ceremony of a film festival in Cairo wearing a see-through dress that exposed her legs.

Rania Youssef, the Egyptian actress, will undergo a trial on January 12, 2019, following a complaint received by the head of the prosecutor's office by a group of lawyers who opposed the actress.

As it is known, Egypt is a conservative country with a majority of Muslim population. Egypt, a country with a population of 100 million, still retains the remnants of secularism even though it has experienced growth in religious conservatism for decades. The Youssef case serves as a reminder that Islamic fundamentalism continues to have a voice after an Islamist president was overthrown by the military amid mass protests against him.

Rania Youssef had previously apologized for wearing the see-through dress that exposed her legs. She claimed he would not wear it if she knew it would cause controversy.

"This is my first time wearing it and I don't realize it will trigger so much anger," Rania said in a post on social media.

"I reaffirm my commitment to the values we use in Egyptian society."

This is not the first time a female public figure in Egypt has faced charges for wearing open clothing.

Last year an Egyptian court jailed singer Shaimaa Ahmed for two years - then reduced to one year - for appearing in a music video wearing underpants and seemingly showing being seductive while eating bananas, as reported by Stuff.
