JAKARTA, NNC - Social media giant Facebook is set to announce the Digital Literacy Library that contains educational materials. The education materials in the digital library can be developed by educational institutions as teaching materials.
"There are 830 million young people in cyberspace around the world. This library is a source for teachers interested in digital literacy to help young people develop the skills needed to be able to access digital technology in a safe way," Facebook said on their official blog.
Facebook has collaborated with the Youth and Media team at Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society from Harvard University in developing materials compiled for internet users aged 11-18 years.
The topics included in the teaching materials range from security, personal data to exploration of identity.
"These teaching materials can be presented together or separately, in school programs or at home, and can be modified according to the ideas and teaching experience," Facebook said.
18 of these teaching materials can be accessed through the Facebook Safety Center and Berkman Kleins Digital Literacy Resource Platform.
Currently, the new materials are available in English. Facebook plans make the materials available in 45 languages in the near future.
Facebook will also work with non-profit institutions to adapt the teaching materials and add other new materials so that they can be used by teachers.
Before creating a Digital Literacy Library, as quoted from Antara, Facebook created a Youth Portal, also in the Safety Center, containing ways to safely use technology, including providing tips on security in cyberspace and how to report content.
