SINGAPORE, NNC -- US President Donald Trump said he will have a "great relationship" with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as they held their first ever historic meeting in Singapore.
Both made brief statements as they sat together in front of the world media as the historic meeting took place, with US leaders insisting "we will have a great relationship, I have no doubt".
Mr Trump said he felt "really great" and Kim said North Korea and the US had overcome obstacles to be able to hold talks, saying it was "not easy to get here".
"The road leading here has not been smooth, we've overcome so many obstacles that block our eyes and ears, dragging our feet down because of past history, prejudice, but apart from all that, we have succeeded here," said Kim as quoted from Sky News.
The comments came after two leaders shared a 12-second handshake as they met for the first time and exchanged a few words with each other.
After stepping away from the media spotlight, Kim and Trump reappear, walking along the balcony and posing for a picture.
The two leaders met for about 40 minutes and were followed only by their interpreter.
