Philippines President Duterte Closes 31st ASEAN Summit

MANILA, FILIPINA, NETRALNEWS.COM - The Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has officially closed the 31st ASEAN Summit at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Manila, Philippines on Tuesday (14/11/2017).

"We have finally completed the series of activities of the 31st ASEAN Summit under the leadership of the Philippines," said President Rodrigo Duterte.

Duterte said the Philippines Government has done all its duty during the term of office of the Philippines in 2017.

President Duterte also expressed appreciation and gratitude to all stakeholders and the general public who have supported the implementation of the 31st ASEAN Summit and the Philippine leadership in ASEAN throughout 2017.

Furthermore, the President of the Philippines symbolically handed ASEAN's chairmanship to Singapore which effectively served as the Chair of ASEAN in January 2018.

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong symbolically took over the ASEAN chairmanship from the Philippines by receiving a wooden hammer from Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong expressed his appreciation to President Duterte who was considered successful in carrying out his duties and responsibilities during the period of the chairmanship of the Philippines.

The Singapore Prime Minister mentioned several ASEAN outcomes under the Chairmanship of the Philippines, including the ASEAN-China agreement to initiate "Code of Conduct" (CoC) negotiations for the handling of territorial disputes in the South China Sea and the ASEAN Consensus on the Protection and Promotion of Migrant Worker Rights.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong pledged to continue working on improving cooperation among ASEAN member countries and between ASEAN countries and their partners during Singapore's 2018 term.

"Singapore is honored to accept ASEAN chairmanship from the Philippines and we look forward to working with all ASEAN members and welcoming you all to come to Singapore in 2018," he said as quoted by Antara.
