JAKARTA, NNC - In Asia and around the world, an estimated 20 percent of the population have died due to hip fractures related to osteoporosis. Worse, 40 percent of these cannot walk on their own, while the rest require the help of others for a year later. In fact, this disease is actually very easy to prevent.
The best period of time to ensure bone health is at young age. Nutrition specialist dr. Fiastuti Wicaksono, SpGK, says osteoporosis prevention starts with a healthy diet consisting of balanced nutrition.
In addition to keeping good healthy habits, and exercising, prevention of osteoporosis can be done by avoiding three things, namely:
1. Avoid excessive salt intake, food seasonings and preservatives. Sodium content contained in three foods of this type is believed to inhibit the absorption of calcium by the body that can lead to the disappearance of bone density.
2. Avoid smoking, coffee and alcohol. Similar to salt consumption, food seasonings and preservatives, the content of caffeine contained in cigarettes, coffee and alcohol is believed to inhibit the absorption of calcium by the body.
3. Avoid consumption of soft drinks. The content of carbonate and sugar contained in soft drinks is believed to interfere with the absorption of calcium by the body.
