BARCELONA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Does your child love to play video games ?. If so, let him, since playing video games can help improve the area of the brain responsible for attention and visuospatial skills. Visuospatial is a skill that allows us to recognize boxes, triangles, cubes or pyramids while making them more efficient, say scientists in more than 100 scientific analysists.

In the study, researchers led by Marc Palaus of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Spain, revealed that gamers show improvement in some types of attention, such as continuous attention or selective attention. Playing video games also increases the size and efficiency of brain areas associated with visuospatial abilities.

Furthermore, in gamers, brain areas involved in attention are found to be more efficient and require less activation to maintain attention to demanding tasks. On the other hand, the right hippocampus is found enlarged in long-term gamers. For the study, published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, the team collected and analyzed 122 scientific studies, 22 of whom looked at structural changes in the brain and 100 saw changes in brain function and / or behavior.

Conversely, video games can also turn into addictions, and cause internet gaming disorders, which can lead to problems such as obesity and poor vision as well as emotional problems, the researchers warn.

"The possibility of video games has both positive (attention, visual and motor skills) and negative aspects (risk of addiction), and it is very important we embrace this complexity," said Palaus, as quoted from Blodsky, Tuesday (6/27).
