Education Minister: President Approves Five-Day School Proposal

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Minister of Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendy says the ministry has not yet implemented Minister of Education and Culture Regulation No. 23 of 2017 on School Day on June 9, 2017. This regulation stipulates the school time for 5 days, each for 8 hours with educational lessons and activities on character building program.

According to Muhadjir, in a press conference after meeting President Joko Widodo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday (6/19), the President approved the proposal of Education and Culture related to the alignment of school holidays with holiday employees so that Saturday and Sunday can be used as public holidays through government regulation no. 19 Year 2017.

Based on the regulation, it is mentioned that the teaching hours of teachers are 40 hours of work a week and are planned to begin in the new school year.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI) Ma’ruf Amin, accompanied by Muhadjir, said President Joko Widodo will strengthen the regulation of schools for five days from Ministerial Regulation to Presidential Regulation.

"In the drafting, it will involve in addition to the related ministers, the Minister of Education and Culture, the Minister of Religious Affairs, may also have a connection with the Minister of Home Affairs will also involve later mass organizations including MUI, NU, Muhammadiyah and other mass organizations,” said Ma'ruf Amin.

Previously, the Minister of Education and Culture issued the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 23 of 2017 on School Day on June 9, 2017 that regulated the school time for 5 days each 8 hours with educational lessons and character building programs.

Ma'ruf added that the enactment of the regulation will wait for the Presidential Regulation. Presidential Regulation will later strengthen a number of Islamic educational institutions such as Madrasah Diniyah.

"Later will be formulated the form of strengthening and cooperation like what and what additional rules will be raised in order to strengthen," said Ma'ruf.
