JAKARTA, NNC - Researcher at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) Luky Sandra Amalia said Yenny Wahid's support for presidential and vice presidential candidates Joko Widodo-Ma'ruf Amin was important because it also influenced the Nahdliyin.
Moreover, the father of Yenny Wahid, the late KH Abdurrahman Wahid aka Gus Dur, was the founder of the National Awakening Party (PKB) which had a mass base that could not be separated from the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Islamic mass organization in Indonesia to date.
"Whatever the family has decided is indeed important for those Nahdliyin who are still obedient to their kiai [cleric]," she said as reported by Antara on Thursday (09/27/2018).
The support from Abdurrahman Wahid's family, said Luky Sandra, further broadened the mass base of the Nahdliyin which would be obtained by the pair number 01, Jokowi-Ma'ruf, apart from PKB and United Development Party (PPP) which had already joined.
She said even though Yenny Wahid's husband is a Gerindra Party cadre, Yenny stepped out of the patriarchal paradigm and had her own political views that might be different from her husband.
Regarding the tug of war among the family of the late KH Abdurrahman Wahid by the stronghold of the presidential-vice presidential candidate pairs, Jokowi-Ma'ruf and Prabowo-Sandiaga, Luky considered it normal especially that there are only two candidate pairs in the 2019 presidential race.
"Following the declaration yesterday, it is official the votes from Gus Dur's family can attract the masses to Jokowi's camp. The initial claim will have been completed by yesterday's declaration," Luky said.
Earlier, Yenny Wahid and nine members of the Gus Dur Cadres Consortium declared support for the Jokowi-Ma'ruf Amin duet.
