MAKASSAR, NNC - Indonesian Police Headquarter's Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) and South Sulawesi Regional Police managed to secure 43 illegal 24-carat gold bars from Timika, Papua. In addition, police also apprehended 3 suspects with the initials D (49), JKF (50), and HA (45) who hand-carried the golds to South Sulawesi.
The case was successfully revealed after the Directorate of Certain Criminal Acts (Dittipidter) of the Bareskrim arrested a suspect with the initial D (49) at Hasanuddin National Airport arrival on Thursday, May 25. Authorities have seized 15pc 24-carat gold bars weighing approximately 16.7 kilograms as evidence.
Bareskrim Dittipiter Sub-directorate Chief V, Senior Commissioner S. Putut Wicaksono, said crime committed by the suspects have cost the state hundreds of millions.
"The state should have received a state income of 3.75 percent from the total gold," Putut said Thursday, Sept 13.
The suspects are charged with Article 161 of Law Number 4 Year 2009 on Mineral and Coal with a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment and a maximum fine of IDR 10 billion.
