JAKARTA, NNC -- Finally, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo decided the Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) KH. Ma'aruf Amin as the vice presidential candidate in the upcoming 2019 presidential election.
Jokowi admitted that he chose KH. Ma'aruf Amin through very deep reflection and with consideration from various elements of society.
"On this occasion I want to convey a very important decision after going through deep reflection and with consideration of inputs from various elements of society, as I mentioned earlier," said Jokowi, at Plataran Menteng, Jakarta, Thursday (8/9/2018).
"I decided and got the approval of the coalition parties, that is, the Indonesia Works coalition, that the one who will accompany me as the vice presidential candidate of period 2019-2024 is Professor DR. KH. Ma'ruf Amin," he added.
Jokowi added he considered the figure of KH. Ma'aruf Amin as a national figure.
"Ma'ruf Amin who was born on March 11, 1943 is a wise religious figure. He sits in the legislature as a member of the DPRD, DPR RI, MPR RI [Legislative Institutions], Wantimpres [Presidential Advisory Council], NU Rais Aam [Nahdlatul Ulama General Chairman] and also chairman of the MUI, Indonesian Ulema Council," said Jokowi.
Moreover, continued Jokowi, KH. Ma'ruf Amin is considered very close to the spirit of diversity which is expected to reduce political chaos in Indonesia.
"In relation to diversity, Prof. DR KH Ma'ruf Amin currently serves as the steering board of the Pancasila ideology advisory board," he continued. "We complement each other, Nationalist-Religious."
