PVMBG Discloses Source of Earthquake in Lombok

Magnitude 7.0 Jolt Lombok

JAKARTA, NNC - Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), Geological Agency - Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) said the causes of the Lombok earthquake. Based on the position and depth it is estimated that the source of the earthquake is associated with Flores back-arc Thrust.

It is known the epicenter of the earthquake is at sea. Most of the area is composed of Tertiary to Quaternary volcanic deposits as well as Tertiary to Pre-Tertiary sediment and metamorphic.

Most of these deposits have been raised and weathered. In the weathered deposits it is estimated that earthquake shocks will be stronger because these rocks are decomposed, loose, not compact and strengthen the vibration effect, making them vulnerable to earthquake shocks.

According to the information that NNC received, the community was encouraged to remain calm and follow the directions and information from the local government and the local Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). They should not get provoked by irresponsible issues regarding earthquakes and tsunamis.

Aftershocks will also be smaller than major earthquakes, but people are expected to remain vigilant. In addition, residents around the North Lombok coast, are to avoid the area around the beach and look for a higher place.

As is known, an earthquake occurred on Sunday (8/5/2018), at 6:46:35 pm. Based on information from the BMKG the main earthquake center was at coordinates 8.37° South Latitude and 116.48° East Longitude, with a magnitude of 7.0 on Richter scale at a depth of 15 Km, a distance of 27 Km northeast of North Lombok.

According to BMKG the earthquake was felt at VI MMI in Mataram, Lombok. According to information from the Mount Agung Observation Post, this earthquake was felt at IV MMI in the Observation Post. This earthquake was thought to cause a tsunami so that Tsunami early warning was issued.
