JAKARTA, NNC - Gerindra Party Chairman Prabowo Subianto says he does not rule out the possibility of running as presidential candidate. The former Commander General of Indonesian Army Special Forces Command (Kopassus) is also willing to run in the election if requested by the party and the public.
"If we are needed and the people are demanding, asking and being given health by God, we should not refute the people's wishes," Prabowo said during the 10th Anniversary of Gerindra Party on Saturday (2/10/2018).
However, until now Prabowo has not confirmed his position related to his candidacy in the 2019 Presidential Election. It is still too early for him to discuss the presidency considering registration will be opened by August.
"It is still a long time. The registration is [opened] in August, why [people] are already so noisy now," he said.
Meanwhile Gerindra Party Secretary General Ahmad Muzani acknowledged Prabowo has not confirmed his running for Presidential Election. However, all elements of Gerindra Party from the central to branch levels unanimously support Prabowo to compete in the upcoming presidential race.
"Everyone wants the same thing, and Mr. Prabowo seizes that. As for willingness, it is still being anticipated. As for signal for running, we have captured it. God willing, he will run," said Muzani.
Muzani was still reluctant to confirm when Gerindra Party will declare Prabowo as a candidate for President. His party is still exploring the coalition with a number of other parties.
"Gerindra only has 73 seats [in parliament]. There remains 39 seats short, so we have to coalesce. Thus, in this remaining time we are communicating with all the power of political parties in Senayan to increase the lack of seats," said Muzani.
